THE POPULARITY OF SKINCARE PRODUCTS AMONG 10-14 YEAR OLDS HAS SKYROCKETED IN THE PAST TWO YEARS.  SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS ARE LIKELY THE CUPRIT, TOUTING $75 SERUMS, ANTI-AGING MOISTURIZERS AND ACTIVE INGREDIENTS FAR TOO STRONG FOR THE UNDER 16 CROWD.

Esty Advice

The tween and teen age group is a great time to establish a solid skincare routine that includes a daily SPF.  But it is also imperative to tread with caution when choosing products.  Stay away from products that include active ingredients such as: retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid (unless you are treating breakouts/acne), vitamin C and charcoal.

Be wary of sheet masks that are marketed to tweens and teens via glittery, bright packaging. The active ingredients in many sheet masks are far too strong for young skin!  The majority of active ingredients harm more than improve tween/teen skin.  The exception to this rule is when treating breakouts and acne (see our Acne Guide).

I think of it this way: tween and teen skin is operating at peak performance (have you ever
noticed how quickly a kid’s skin heals from a cut or scrape?!) and it does not need strong active
ingredients.  Look for aloe-based, gentle products. Here are a few of our favorites:
